7 Top Tips for Networking

What do you do to raise your business profile?

Do you “network”?

The word “networking” may send you running for the hills but there are some huge benefits to be gained from it – especially for small businesses.

Our CEO, Andy Ball, has recently stepped out of his comfort zone into networking - becoming a member of the local BNI Network.

They meet every week and take the time to learn about each other’s business so that they can recommend your business when the opportunity arises. It is not just a one-sided affair – rather a partnership with other businesses to work together and refer potential clients to one another.

But it is not just about generating referrals, you can seek advice and exchange information too.

When done correctly, networking can be a solid way to build your network and generate leads.

Where to stay? What to do?

Following on from Andy’s “networking for growth” article, here are my top tips on how to make the most from #networking

  1. Research. Look into your local networking groups and try them out for size. There will be various groups with different kinds of people and businesses, you need to find the group that suits your business the most.

  2. Mind-set. Networking is a long-term investment of your time (and money, in some cases). It is about taking time to build mutually beneficial referral networks and connections who support what you do. The more time and effort you can dedicate to it, the more you will gain. If you don’t have the right mindset (long-term rather than overnight) then it is not going to work.

  3. Be prepared. When you attend a networking event, have your elevator pitch ready (a short description of what you do and why it is important). Also have a think about what you want to get out of the event and what kinds of businesses you would like to align with.

  4. Follow-up. Rome wasn’t built in a day - and neither are relationships! Make sure you get in touch with the people you meet that you think would be a good link for you. Send an email, connect on LinkedIn.

  5. Refine. Spend time learning about businesses that align best with your business, thinking about how you can help each other to grow. Arrange 1-2-1 meetings to have a more in-depth conversation. This is where you will start building longer term business relationships.

  6. Keep it regular. Try to attend regular weekly networking events to build momentum and relationships.

  7. Be realistic. If a group is not working out ask yourself “Why?”. Is there something that you can do to make it work? If not, you could try a different group.
